How It Works

The 3-part leap year rule

A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4. However, if it is also divisible by 100, it is not a leap year — unless it is also divisible by 400, in which case it is a leap year.

Examples

  • 2024 is divisible by 4 and not a century → leap year
  • 1900 is divisible by 100 but not 400 → not a leap year
  • 2000 is divisible by 400 → leap year

Frequently asked questions

A year is actually about 365.2422 days long, not exactly 365. Leap years add an extra day (February 29) every four years to keep our calendar in sync with Earth's orbit around the Sun.
