Calendar Days vs Business Days: What's the Difference?
A "10-day deadline" can mean two very different dates depending on whether it counts calendar days or business days. Get it wrong and you might pay an invoice late, miss a return window, or blow a project deadline — all while believing you had time to spare.

What Counts as a Calendar Day
A calendar day is simply any day: Monday, Sunday, Christmas — they all count equally. When a contract, law, or policy says "30 days" without qualification, it often means calendar days. Rent notices, subscription renewals, and many formal deadlines typically work this way — though the governing document always has the final word, so check its exact wording. The counting is straightforward: if something is due in 14 calendar days, find today on a calendar and count forward 14 squares.
What Counts as a Business Day
A business day (also called a working day or work day) is a day when offices and banks normally operate: Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays. Shipping estimates, bank transfers, payroll processing, and invoice terms like "Net 10 business days" all use this definition.
Two details trip people up. First, which holidays count depends on the country — and sometimes the province or state. A business day in Toronto isn't always a business day in New York. Second, the counting convention usually starts with the next business day, not the current one: an order placed Friday afternoon with "2 business day shipping" typically arrives Tuesday, not Monday.
A Worked Example
Say a contract is signed on Friday, March 6, 2026 with payment due in 10 days.
If it means 10 calendar days: count every day — Saturday the 7th, Sunday the 8th, and so on. Day 10 is Monday, March 16, 2026.
If it means 10 business days: skip both weekends. The count runs Monday March 9 through Friday March 13 (days 1–5), then Monday March 16 through Friday March 20 (days 6–10). Payment is due Friday, March 20, 2026 — four days later than the calendar-day version.
On a 10-day window the gap is four days. On a 30-day window it stretches to roughly twelve. The longer the deadline, the more expensive the mix-up.
How to Count It Manually
For calendar days, count forward on a calendar, including every square. For business days, count forward skipping Saturdays, Sundays, and any public holidays that apply in the relevant country.
One edge case to watch: when a calendar-day deadline lands on a weekend or holiday, many contracts and laws roll it to the next business day — but not all do. If money or legal rights are on the line, check the exact wording rather than assuming.

Which One Applies to You?
A quick rule of thumb: money moving between businesses tends to run on business days; rights and notices tend to run on calendar days. Shipping, banking, payroll, and B2B invoices usually mean business days. Leases, legal notices, return policies, and government deadlines usually mean calendar days. When a document just says "days" with no qualifier, calendar days is the more common reading — but the only safe answer is the one written in the document itself.

Is Saturday a business day? No. In the standard definition, business days run Monday through Friday. Saturday and Sunday are excluded even though some businesses are open on weekends.
Do business days include public holidays? No — public holidays are excluded. Which holidays apply depends on the country and sometimes the region, so a cross-border payment can lose a day when the two sides observe different holidays.
What does "within 5 business days" mean for shipping? Count five weekdays starting from the next business day after your order ships, skipping any holidays. An order shipped on Wednesday should arrive by the following Wednesday.
