ISO Week Numbers Explained: Why Week 1 Doesn't Start on January 1

Why week numbers don't line up with January 1

Most people assume "week 1" simply means the first seven days of the year. Under the ISO 8601 standard — widely used in Europe, many international business settings, and software systems — that's not how it works.

Two rules define an ISO week:

  • Weeks run Monday to Sunday. Not Sunday-to-Saturday like the informal US convention.
  • Week 1 is the week that contains the year's first Thursday (equivalently, the week that contains January 4th).

Because of that second rule, whichever day January 1st happens to fall on determines whether the start of the year gets pulled into the previous year's week count, or whether the end of the previous year gets pulled into the new year's Week 1.

A worked example: 2026 shows both sides of the rule

2026 is a good year to illustrate this, because it happens to be a 53-week ISO year — and both boundary effects show up in it:

  • The year starts mid-week. January 1, 2026 falls on a Thursday. Since Week 1 must contain the first Thursday of the year, and Thursday itself is Jan 1, Week 1 of 2026 is simply the Monday-to-Sunday span that contains that Thursday: December 29, 2025 through January 4, 2026. So the last three days of December 2025 (Dec 29–31) are technically part of ISO Week 1, 2026 — not Week 52 of 2025.
  • The middle of the year checks out cleanly. Run the numbers forward 27 more weeks and you land on Week 28, 2026, running Monday July 6 to Sunday July 12 — exactly what the calculator shows for a July 10, 2026 lookup.
  • The year ends mid-week too. Because 2026's January 1st is a Thursday, 2026 stretches to 53 ISO weeks instead of the usual 52. December 31, 2026 also falls on a Thursday, and the final ISO week of the year — Week 53 — runs Monday, December 28, 2026 through Sunday, January 3, 2027. That means the first three days of January 2027 (Jan 1–3) actually belong to Week 53 of 2026, not Week 1 of 2027.

So in the same calendar year, you get both directions of the "boundary" effect: late December days pulled into the new year's count, and early January days pulled into the old year's count.

When does a year get a 53rd week?

Most years have 52 ISO weeks, but a year gets a 53rd week whenever:

  • January 1st of that year falls on a Thursday, or
  • The year is a leap year and January 1st falls on a Wednesday.

Both conditions boil down to the same underlying cause — the year needs an "extra" day positioned so that the first Thursday lands late enough to require a 53rd full week before the calendar resets. Why this matters beyond curiosity

This isn't just a calendar trivia point. ISO week numbers are used in project planning, manufacturing schedules, payroll cycles, and software systems (sprint planning, invoice due dates, fiscal reporting) in many international business settings. If a project plan says "deliverable due Week 1" and someone assumes that means "the first week of January," they can be off by several days — or land in the wrong year's numbering entirely.
