What Makes a Year a Leap Year? (The Real Rule, Not Just "Divisible by 4")
Most people know the basic version: if a year is divisible by 4, it's a leap year, and February gets an extra day. That's true most of the time — but it's not the complete rule, and the missing piece is exactly the part almost nobody's ever been taught.
Quick summary: A year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except if it's also divisible by 100 — unless it's also divisible by 400. So 2024 was a leap year, 1900 was not, and 2000 was. The "just divide by 4" version gets it wrong for 3 years out of every 400.
The full rule, in three steps
- If the year is divisible by 4, it's a leap year...
- ...unless it's also divisible by 100, in which case it's not a leap year...
- ...unless it's also divisible by 400, in which case it is a leap year after all.
Most years never make it past step 1, since being divisible by 100 only happens once every century. That's exactly why "just divide by 4" survives as common knowledge — it works for most everyday years and only fails for certain century years.
A worked example
- 2024: divisible by 4, not by 100 → leap year (this is why February 29, 2024 existed)
- 1900: divisible by 4 and by 100, not by 400 → not a leap year
- 2000: divisible by 4, by 100, and by 400 → leap year
- 2100: divisible by 4 and by 100, not by 400 → will not be a leap year
- 2026: not divisible by 4 → not a leap year; the next leap year after 2026 is 2028
1900 and 2000 are the clearest illustration of why the rule needs all three steps. Both years are divisible by 100 — but only one of them clears the 400 exception, and that's the one difference that decides it.
Why leap years exist at all
Earth's orbit around the sun takes about 365.2422 days — not a clean 365. If the calendar just used flat 365-day years, it would drift out of sync with the seasons by about 1 day every 4 years, or roughly 24 days every century. Adding a leap day every 4 years keeps the calendar closely aligned, so seasons stay anchored to roughly the same calendar dates year after year.
Why the century exception exists
Adding a leap day every single 4 years is actually a slight overcorrection. Averaging 365.25 days a year (from 1 extra day every 4 years) is a bit more than the real 365.2422-day solar year. Over 400 years, that overcorrection adds up to roughly 3 extra days. The Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582, fixes this by skipping the leap day in century years that aren't divisible by 400 — removing exactly 3 leap years every 400-year cycle. That brings the average calendar year down to 365.2425 days, accurate to within about 1 day every 3,300 years.
